Vision and Looking Ahead on Track
Vision, in a race car, means deliberately looking further ahead than feels natural and anchoring your eyes to specific reference points on track rather than the car in front of you or the corner you're already in. Get it right, and the whole lap slows down in your head without the car actually going any slower. Get it wrong, and you spend the whole session feeling like the car is one step ahead of you.
If the car ever feels like it's ahead of you, like you're constantly catching up, that's not a technique problem. That's a vision problem. Nearly every driver I coach has a vision problem before they have a technique problem, they just don't know to look there first.
Your eyes control everything
How early you react, how smooth your inputs are, how much time you give yourself to think: all of it starts with your eyes. Most inexperienced drivers look at what's right in front of them, just over the bonnet, ten or fifteen metres ahead. They're reading what's already happening. By the time the brain processes it and the hands and feet respond, the moment has already passed. They're always reacting.
Experienced drivers do something different. They don't just look further ahead, they anchor their vision to specific reference points and move between them deliberately. This is vision anchoring, and it's what separates reactive driving from predictive driving. It's a learned habit, not a gift some drivers are born with, which is the good news: it's trainable the same way braking or trail braking is.
The vision anchoring chain
Here's how the chain runs. As you approach a corner, your first job is finding your braking marker. Spot it early, maybe a hundred or so metres out, and hold your focus there until just before you start braking. Not vaguely looking in that direction. Locked on it.
The moment you hit the brakes, your eyes shift to the next anchor, your turn-in point. You've committed to the braking process, so there's no value staring at where you just were. Your brain needs to know what's next. As you begin turning, your eyes move again, this time near the apex. And as you transition through it, you're already looking at the exit. By the time the car reaches each point, your eyes have already moved on to the next one.
Braking marker, turn-in, near the apex, exit, next corner. Your eyes are always one step ahead of where the car actually is, feeding your brain information early enough to stay smooth. Why the corner slows down when your vision speeds up
When your vision flows like this, something shifts. The corner doesn't feel rushed anymore. Your hands aren't scrambling. Everything slows down, because your brain has time to process what's coming instead of reacting to what just happened. That's the real difference between anticipation and reaction. Anticipation feels calm. Reaction feels frantic.
This doesn't mean you ignore what's close to the car. Your primary vision is forward, locked on the next anchor, but your peripheral vision is constantly reading the edges: kerbs, track limits, surface changes. That's how you can look so far ahead and still place the car with precision. The two work together, not instead of each other.
Tunnel vision, and why your eyes stop moving
If you've ever caught yourself staring at the apex, or fixated on a car ahead of you, that's tunnel vision. Your eyes have stopped moving, and when your eyes stop, your brain stops predicting. That's when mistakes happen. It's rarely a dramatic moment. It's usually just a driver whose eyes got stuck on the thing right in front of them instead of the thing coming next.
Vision is a diagnostic tool, not just a technique
This is the part most drivers miss: vision isn't only something you practise in isolation, it's the first place to look when nothing about a corner feels consistent. If the corner is different every lap and you can't put your finger on why, look at your vision before you look anywhere else.
Late vision makes everything reactive. The braking is rushed. The apex is misjudged. The throttle timing is off. None of those are separate problems, they're all downstream of the same cause. Lift your eyes to the next reference point and the whole corner starts to feel more predictable, not because the technique changed, but because your brain finally had time to plan instead of react. Building the habit
The fix is deliberate practice, not a mindset shift. Next time you're on track, focus purely on your vision sequence. Spot your braking marker early. Shift to turn-in as you brake. Move to the apex as you turn. Look to the exit before you're even there.
At first it'll feel mechanical, almost forced. That's fine. You're building the habit. After a few laps, the corner will start to feel slower and more predictable, not because you're going slower, but because your brain has more time to process what's ahead. Run it onboard if you can and watch where your eyes actually go versus where you think they go. Most drivers are surprised by the gap.
Your vision controls your speed
Where you look is where the car goes. Your hands and feet just follow. When your eyes are late, you're reacting. When your eyes are ahead, you're in control. Every other technique in this series, braking, the racing line, weight transfer, understeer and oversteer, only works as well as the vision that sets it up.
