The Racing Line Explained: Apex, Late Apex and Exit Speed

Most drivers can draw the racing line. Fewer can tell you why it's shaped the way it is.
And that's the problem, because a line you've memorised falls apart the moment the corner changes, the grip drops, or the corner feeds onto a straight you hadn't accounted for. A line you understand adapts. So let's do this properly. Not the shape to copy, but the reasoning underneath it, so you can find the fast line through any corner, not just the ones someone has drawn for you.
The racing line is the straightest path through a bend
Start with the one idea everything else hangs off. A car goes fastest in a straight line, and it's slowest when it's turning hard. So the fast way through a corner is the path that bends the least: the one that opens the corner out, reduces how sharply you have to turn, and lets you carry the most speed.
That's why the classic line runs from the outside of the track, in to the inside, and back out to the outside. Out, in, out. By using the full width of the road, you turn a tight corner into a gentler arc than the corner actually is. Less steering, less scrubbed speed, more grip left over for going forward. Everything else is a refinement of that single principle.
The apex is where you meet the inside
The apex is the point where your line touches the inside of the corner. It's the pivot of the whole thing, and where you put it decides how the rest of the corner behaves.
Put it early, and you clip the inside sooner. Put it late, and you carry your line deeper into the corner before you turn down to the inside. This is where most of the real lap time is won and lost, because the apex you choose sets your exit, and your exit sets the straight that follows.
Here's the mistake almost every driver makes when they're learning. They apex too early. It feels natural to turn in as soon as you can see the inside, but an early apex points the car at the outside of the track too soon. You get to the apex, the corner is still going, and now you're running out of road on exit with the steering still wound on. You end up having to lift or add steering exactly when you want to be accelerating. It feels rushed because it is.
Why the late apex is usually the fast one
For most corners that lead onto a straight, the fast apex is a later one.
By waiting, you sacrifice a little entry speed and turn the car more at the start. But you get something worth far more in return: the car is pointed straight, or close to it, earlier. And a car that's pointed straight can take full throttle. You trade a slower entry for an earlier, harder exit, and because that exit speed compounds all the way down the straight, the trade almost always pays. This is the same reason patience on the throttle turns into lap time gains, with interest down the straight that follows.
The longer the straight after the corner, the later you want the apex, because exit speed matters more the longer you're carrying it. A tight corner onto a long straight is worth giving up real entry speed to nail the exit. A fast corner in the middle of a sequence, where there's no straight to reward you, is a different calculation.
Not every corner is the same corner
This is where memorised lines fail and understanding wins.
A corner that leads onto a straight is an exit corner: prioritise the drive out, use a later apex, give up entry speed for exit speed. A corner that leads into a braking zone matters less on exit, so you can afford a more geometric line and carry more speed in. And a sequence of linked corners is a compromise, because the exit of the first corner sets up the entry of the second. You can't take each one on its perfect individual line. You give up the ideal line through the first to get the better line through the one that leads onto the straight.
Working out which corner is which, and what it's asking of you, is the skill. Diagnose the corner before you commit to a line through it. That's how you drive a track you've never seen and still find the fast way round. The line and the braking work together
The line isn't something you set and then drive. It's tied to what you're doing with the brakes.
Your turn-in point, where you first ask the car to change direction, is set by the apex you're aiming for, and you arrive there still trailing a little brake pressure. Keeping that trailing brake on near the apex keeps load on the front tyres and helps the car rotate to point at the exit. Get off the brakes too early and the car washes wide of the apex; stay patient with the release and the car settles onto the line you wanted. The line gives the braking somewhere to aim. How to find the line at a new track
You don't need someone to draw it for you. Walk it, or drive it slowly first, and read it backwards.
Start from the exit. Find the point where the track opens onto the next straight and work back from there: if that's where I want the car pointed and on the power, where does the apex need to be to get me there? And if that's the apex, where do I have to turn in, and where do I have to be braking? Reasoning backwards from the exit, rather than forwards from the entry, is what gets you a line that serves the straight instead of one that just feels tidy going in.
Then refine it with your data and onboard. If you're running wide on exit, your apex was too early. If you're getting to the apex and the corner keeps going, same thing. The car and the data will tell you where the line is wrong, as long as you know what to look for.
