Threshold Braking Explained: Technique and Braking Points

Threshold braking is holding the brakes right at the limit of the tyres' grip, just short of locking, so the car slows in the shortest possible distance.
Simple to say. Harder to do. And braking is where most drivers give away the most time on track. Not because they brake too late or too early, but because they treat braking as a single action: pedal down, car slows, turn in. It isn't. Braking is a sequence, and threshold braking is what happens when you manage that sequence properly instead of standing on the pedal and hoping. So let's do this the way I teach it in the programme: what the sequence looks like, what the car tells you at each stage, and where your braking point actually comes from.
Good braking looks like a mountain
If you could see your braking on a data trace, clean braking looks like a mountain. A steep climb to peak pressure. A controlled, short hold at the top. Then a smooth, progressive release back down.
That shape tells you almost everything about how the braking was executed. A flat trace means the initial hit was too soft. A stepped trace means the release was abrupt. A messy trace means the driver was fighting the car through the braking zone. One smooth, deliberate mountain, and every part of it has a job. The climb is the initial hit. The top is threshold braking proper. The way down is the release that becomes your corner entry.
Phase one: the initial hit
The first moment your foot hits the brake decides how the rest of the braking zone plays out. That initial hit transfers weight forward and loads the front tyres. The load is what creates grip, and grip is what allows the car to brake hard without locking.
Most drivers arrive at the track with road habits still in place. On the road, gentle and progressive braking is exactly right. On a race track, that same habit means the front tyres load up slowly, and a slowly loaded tyre never reaches its potential in the braking zone. What you want instead is one clean, firm, decisive movement. Not a jab. Not a slow squeeze. A fast, confident pressure build that loads the front tyres immediately and gets the car set early.
Think of it like getting a boat up on the plane. Until it's up and running correctly, everything feels laboured and slow to respond. The moment it gets on the plane, it becomes efficient, controlled and fast. The initial hit is that moment for the car.
You'll know when it's working, because the car tells you. The nose drops. The steering gets heavier as the front tyres load up. The car feels planted. When it's not working, the nose stays high, and it feels like the closer you get to the corner, the more brake pressure you have to add, which unsettles the car right when you want it stable. Too soft and you never reach peak grip. Too aggressive and you overshoot it, the tyre locks or the ABS steps in hard. What you're chasing is peak grip, not peak pedal pressure.
Phase two: staying on a limit that keeps moving
Here's the part of threshold braking nearly everyone gets wrong. Peak brake pressure is not something you hold. It's something you manage.
The moment the car starts slowing, the grip available at the tyres starts changing too. As speed drops, there's less load going through them, and in a car with downforce the aero load is falling away as well. Which means the pressure that was exactly right at the start of the braking zone is too much by the time you're approaching turn-in. Hold peak pressure too long and the fronts overload: they lock, or the ABS intervenes hard, and the car gets unsettled at precisely the moment you need it planted and ready to turn.
So the pressure has to come down progressively. Not a sudden drop, not a plateau you cling to until the last moment. A smooth, continuous reduction that tracks the available grip as it shrinks, keeping the tyres right at their limit all the way to turn-in.
The pedal isn't static through any of this. You're making small, continuous adjustments, and the information you need is already coming through the car. Pedal feel tells you how close you are to the limit. Steering weight tells you how loaded the front tyres are. The attitude of the car tells you whether the pressure is right or whether you've held on too long. If you're in a car with ABS, use it as a reference point: occasional light activation near the limit is fine, but if it's cutting in hard and repeatedly through the braking zone, the pressure is too high for the speed you're now travelling at. The goal is to stay just below that, reading the car and adjusting rather than waiting for the system to intervene.
A static pedal through the deceleration phase means you're either under the limit or over it. Neither is fast. Constantly adjusting to stay right on it, that's where the lap time is.
Where your braking point actually comes from
A braking point is only useful if it's repeatable, so start by tying it to something fixed: a marker board, the end of a kerb, a change in the track surface. Same reference, every lap. Consistency has to come before bravery, because you can't refine a braking zone you never repeat.
But which point? Work backwards. The corner tells you. The speed you need to carry near the apex sets where your turn-in has to be, and your turn-in sets where the braking has to start. The braking point serves the corner. It was never a target in its own right, which is exactly why chasing later and later braking points as a badge of bravery costs most drivers time. Braking ten metres later saves you a tenth or two at best. A rushed, messy braking zone compromises your entry, your speed near the apex, and your drive onto the straight, and that costs far more than it saved.
So build it in this order. Pick a comfortable reference and make the mountain shape clean and repeatable there first. Then move the point later in small steps, and only as long as the shape stays clean. The moment the trace goes messy or the car stops settling, you've moved past what you can currently execute. That's not a failure. That's the car telling you where your braking zone actually starts today, and giving you something specific to work on. The release is where braking becomes cornering
Threshold braking doesn't finish when the car is slowed. It hands off.
As you approach turn-in, brake pressure starts to reduce while steering begins to increase, and those two inputs are linked directly. As steering angle builds, the tyres shift their grip toward cornering, so braking demand has to reduce at the same rate. Release too quickly and the front unloads suddenly and the car pushes wide. Hold too much pressure into the steering and the rear becomes unsettled. A good release is smooth and progressive, and it continues all the way to near the apex. The point is that braking isn't just about slowing the car down. It sets up the entry, the rotation and the exit. The mountain shape, fast rise, controlled hold, smooth release, isn't just a technique. It's the foundation the entire corner is built on.
How to work on it at your next track day
Don't try to fix all three phases at once. Next session, pay attention to just the first moment on the pedal. Did the nose drop? Did the steering get heavier? Did the car feel immediately stable and controlled? If yes, the front tyres loaded and the corner is set up. If not, everything that follows is a compromise, and you know exactly which phase to work on.
Then check your onboard or your data afterwards and look for the mountain. The shape will tell you which phase needs attention next, as long as you know what to look for.
